I still think Rebel Without a Crew is good bet... it's interesting that "Shirt" (If that is your real name) recommends If Chins Could Kill but disses Rebel, when they both come from the same angle on filmmaking (Amateurs going "Pro" through experience rather than training) and teach essentially the same lesson ("F?ck Hollywood! Do it yourself!")

Well. I am not a fan of R-Rod. He's never come close to being a great director and I challenge you to prove me wrong...
Tell me, honestly, that R-Rod has outdirected any of these directors and what I, personally, feel is their best work...

R-Rod just doesn't do it for me, and as for the entire 'from nothing to something' deal, all of the guys above came from nothing and worked their asses off to be great. I'm sorry, but if any of the guys above wrote a book about starting out, it would be much more useful then R-Rod's. Why? Because all of their first films stank like ours will/ do and used them as tools to better themselves. They didn't just luck out the first time around, thus not learning much, thus being at the helm of SPY KIDS 3D!
As for Chins!, his pure writing ability and the fact that Bruce is both an actor and television director makes his book that much more entertaining. It was entertaining and that is all.

Well, for start, you can't really compare the shlocky B-movie stuff that R-Rod likes to make to Mystic River or The Truman Show. It's like comparing Big Trouble in Little China to The Last Emperor.
And Rodriguez made Bedhead, which is a very good short and won a bollock load of awards (well, one or two).
I agree he's not the best director in the world, but I'll keep watching his movies. And I learnt more from Rebel Without a Crew than 2 years of media studies and 1.5 years of video production.
The man knows how to make a movie on the cheap. The movie won't win any Oscars, but his methods can certainly save you money, and I think the book should be read on that principal. Just borrow it off someone, for Chrissakes. Get it from library. Se? Saving money already. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

don't have a go at spy kids, thats not fair on the chap. its fair to say they aren't great films but he was quoted as saying that he wanted to make something that his kids could watch. (it might not be his kids but certainly some kids he is related too)
personally i think the rest of his films are great. 90 minutes of action, shoddy effects (from dusk till dawn, the faculty!) and laughs. he makes films that he wants to watch and is quite obviously not a terrible director. and probably someday in the future will make an absolutely great film.
how many of the books read at film school are written by oscar winning directors? It seems to me like making amazing movies and writing about how to make amazing movies is not the same thing.
So Rodriguez isnt the best director in the world? Who gives a shit... if his book is entertaining, teachs you stuff you didnt know, and inspires you to try that little bit harder on your next movie then i couldnt care less if the guy has made a masterpiece or not.

I was looking at Amazon after this reading this post looking to see if any books caught my eye and i was quite suprised but pleased to see that if chins could kill was the 7th highest selling biography in the movie/tv section... one place above Johny Depp! [img]smile.gif[/img]
Now if only Hollywood would see what a following The Chin has and put him in a leading role.

Rodriguez's book kept me entertained on a train journey. Thats not to be sniffed at.
I doubt if the guy will ever create a "great" movie. The storys he writes/chooses are all very silly and over the top. But hey, hes found his niche and so far he's sticking to it.
